Laura's long-time friend, Jane Canfield, returns to Walnut Grove, despite being blind. As fate would have it, she develops feelings for Mr. Edwards, who is significantly older than her. After undergoing a surgery that restores her sight, Jane faces a tough decision. Mr. Edwards, after much reflection, encourages her to seek out a brighter future for herself. The episode concludes with Mr. Edwards standing at a distance, watching as Jane departs on a stagecoach, symbolizing her new beginning.
