Twelve centuries ago, courtiers in Heian Japan adorned themselves in robes dyed with medicinal herbs, creating colors associated with prayers for peace and protection against malevolence. Sadly, many of these hues have faded into history. Intrigued by these lost pigments, a group of Kyoto residents is working to bring them back to life by developing new dyeing methods. Explore how they are embracing traditional techniques and ancient knowledge, cultivating native plants for use as pigments, and crafting unique, handmade garments.
