Determined to eradicate hunger, Challenger volunteers to be the first human to trial his groundbreaking food substitute. However, the nutritional drink fails him, unlike the success seen in his lab mice, leading him to become consumed by the need to understand why. His fixation spirals into madness as he encounters two conflicting hallucinations: one depicting his younger, ambitious self as a scientist, and the other revealing his cherished wife, Jessie, as she was when he left her in London three years prior. When his friends eventually find him, he lies unconscious and on the brink of death. Can their limited medical expertise save him from the consequences of his experiment without putting him in greater danger?
