However, as the investigation unfolds, the evidence gathered by both the police and media leads to inconsistencies in her account, prompting her to withdraw her claims. Despite this, Benson believes a rape did happen, directing the investigation toward the girl's controlling stepfather, who has been obstructive since the beginning.
