Ryan's father, Ray, a minor inventor, arrives in town boasting of newfound wealth and his plans to marry. He reveals that his success stems from a magical pipe gifted by Lewis Vendredi, which he has used to obliterate the young inventor whose concepts he plagiarized, as well as his competitors. As Ryan and Micki uncover the dark reality, Ray turns the pipe on Micki, intent on killing her. In a moment of bravery, Ryan jumps in front of her. Ultimately, Ray reconciles with his son and chooses to take the lethal smoke himself, sacrificing his life to save Ryan.
