Jethro signs up for the army reserve, and Granny insists he don the uniform that belonged to her Grandpappy. When he shows up, the sergeant mistakes him for a background actor in a Civil War film. The Colonel instructs him to return on Monday. While there, Jethro overhears the Colonel speaking with an actor portraying General Grant, leading him to believe the Yankees are preparing for another battle against the South. Excited, Jethro rushes home to tell Granny, who then dresses as a Southern belle to gather intel on Grant's plans. She discovers that an attack on the Culpepper plantation is imminent and quickly sets off to warn them.
