The tenants organize a sidewalk sale to fund the necessary repairs for 227. Lester pleads with Mary not to sell his aunt's unattractive lamp, but she goes ahead and sells it for $5. When Lester discovers this, he’s not just angry about the lamp; he had hidden the sale's profits inside it. The other tenants turn against Mary, ostracizing her. Fortunately, the wife of the man who bought the lamp visits Mary to return it, admitting she didn’t like it either. They manage to buy it back from the couple for $50, recouping the funds needed to save 227.
