Calvin invites Brenda to the basketball dance, but she can't attend since she’s still a week shy of her 16th birthday, leaving her feeling down. Once her sweet sixteen party arrives, Sandra inquires about her plans now that she's officially 16. Brenda declares she's going on her first date, and surprisingly, it won’t be with Calvin, leaving both her parents and Calvin stunned. When the Jenkins meet Brenda’s date, Durell, they grill him thoroughly before giving their permission. Later, the Jenkins sneak outside to keep an eye on the couple, where Brenda admits she’s not ready to kiss. Meanwhile, Calvin, hiding near the trash bins, seizes the moment to ask her out for the following Friday.
