Reverend Hill proposes that Joey Emerson, a jobless musician, teach trumpet to some of the kids in the congregation. Roc quickly volunteers his laid-back brother for the task, eager to finally collect some rent money. Instead of offering any musical instruction, Joey spends the lessons making phone calls, placing bets on horse races, and completely neglects the children’s learning. As Roc and Eleanor suffer through the terrible trumpet sounds echoing from the living room, they cling to the hope that the kids will eventually improve. Meanwhile, Roc assures Reverend Hill that Joey and his students will perform at the church's upcoming recital.
