The Virginian encounters a young man named Mark Shannon (Richard Beymer), who, along with his sister (Diana Lynn) and her romantic partner, trail boss Jack Slauson (Myron Healey), is driving a herd of cattle to the army. As they approach Medicine Bow, it becomes apparent that the Shannon cattle may be infected with Spanish fever. While the herd has some immunity, the local cattle do not. The Virginian, representing the local ranchers, urges Mark to reroute to prevent an outbreak, but Mark's refusal leads to a tense confrontation with both the Virginian and Slauson.
