Sarah organizes a picnic for her students to appreciate the great outdoors, but the outing takes a dark turn when Mr. Stokes, inebriated and concealing a secret about an impending fatherhood, assaults her. Doc tries to inform Sarah of the truth, but she dismisses his concerns. Meanwhile, Mr. Pruitt and his son Lester harbor feelings for her. Carl struggles with his emotions, wishing he could express his unconditional love for Sarah's unborn child. After a confrontation with Mr. Stokes, Carl ends up in jail, and Sarah, still reeling from the attack, decides she wants to leave Dodge rather than assist him.
