Maddie Haskel, a twenty-year-old with a small-town charm, attends her mother's funeral in Joplan, Missouri. After the ceremony, she heads back to her family home, where a menacing man named Jim Gilroy confronts her. Just as he attempts to assault her, Maddie's boyfriend, Bobby Webber, appears from the shadows, brandishing a metal pipe. Bobby knocks Gilroy out cold, and the couple hastily drives away with him locked in the trunk. Their escape takes a turn when a Missouri State Trooper spots their car with a broken tail light and pulls them over. Hearing the commotion from the trunk, Bobby panics and shoots the officer dead with a .357.
