Bobbie Jo is gearing up for an upcoming spelling competition, facing off against the talented but pretentious Henrietta Watson. Henrietta's equally snobbish mother, Cora, objects to Sam being chosen as the judge, convinced he will favor Bobbie Jo. Consequently, Oliver Douglas takes over as judge. Lacking self-assurance, Bobbie Jo's luck changes when she discovers a scarab ring that seems to bring her fortune. As the family experiences their own strokes of luck while wearing the ring, Uncle Joe misplaces it and purchases a replacement. After triumphing in the spelling bee, Bobbie Jo comes to understand that her victory was not due to luck, but her own hard work.
