After Sam updates the post office with modern enhancements, he receives alarming news from the government about plans to close his postal substation. Determined to prevent the closure, Uncle Joe rallies the residents of Hooterville to mail items to themselves, demonstrating the necessity of the post office. Accompanied by Janet and Bobbie Jo, Joe heads to Washington D.C. to appeal to his congressman. While visiting the Lincoln Memorial, Joe memorably recites the Gettysburg Address and has an unexpected encounter with President Richard Nixon, who jokingly tells him to call him "Dick." Ultimately, a mix-up leads to the surprising news that Hooterville's post office will remain open.
