Upon returning from a business trip, Janet brings surprising news: she has accepted a position with renowned neurologist, Dr. Pope, and plans to leave the valley for good. This revelation deeply affects everyone, who scramble to find ways to persuade her to stay. Meanwhile, forest ranger Ted Thorsen, who has recently injured his ankle, might just provide a romantic excuse for Janet to reconsider her departure. Ted harbors feelings for her, but despite his interest, she seems set on leaving. However, Betty Jo and Steve devise a compelling reason for Janet to remain. Note: This episode was intended as the series finale, concluding with Betty Jo and Steve's announcement of expecting another child. At the last minute, CBS opted to renew the show for a seventh season, providing five full seasons of color episodes for syndication. When the series returned, the storyline of Betty Jo's pregnancy was completely abandoned.
